Program Info
FLYRS groups are organized by age, following a proven model to create a positive and enjoyable experience for every child. Age-based, inclusive programs allow kids to ride alongside peers, fostering team bonding, friendships, independence, and healthy risk-taking. This naturally supports the development of mountain biking skills and fitness, helping each rider succeed.
Our trained coaches challenge riders at their individual skill levels within their age-based groups, all in a supportive team environment.
We have also heard your feedback and see the challenges with this approach, so we’ve made some updates:
Our trained coaches challenge riders at their individual skill levels within their age-based groups, all in a supportive team environment.
We have also heard your feedback and see the challenges with this approach, so we’ve made some updates:
- Clearer Group Descriptions: To help families select the best fit for their child.
- Larger Group Sizes: On the first day, coaches will regroup kids based on their skills, interests, and friendships, ensuring everyone has the most fun and rewarding experience. Some groups will now have 20 riders and 4 coaches - On the 1st day of practice, experienced coaches will help organize the riders into two groups
- All FLYRS groups are led by a head and assistant coach who are trained in the FLYRS approach, first aid and CPR certified, and have passed a background check. We believe that coaches should enjoy working with kids, have expertise in mountain biking skills, trail etiquette, and best teaching practices, so we hire coaches who possess this requisite knowledge. Our groups meet at different locations as we progress through the season. Typical locations include Fort Tuthill, Campbell Mesa, and the “Y” off Elden Lookout Road.
- Contact FLYRS Program Director, Hannah, for any questions you have about which group is right for your rider ([email protected])

Summer Camps
Our summer camp programs have been expanding each year. For 2025, we hope to offer 8 weeks of half day, full day, and practice style week long camps for youth ages 2-18. Our camps are located at various trailheads and venues throughout Flagstaff such as Fort Tuthill, the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Puente Bike Park.

Race Teams
FLYRS offers two race teams designed to support youth mountain bikers at different levels of competition. The Middle School Composite Team provides Flagstaff-based middle schoolers the opportunity to race in the Arizona Cycling Association (ACA) series each fall, with practices starting in July and races running from September through early November.
For riders looking to take their competitive skills to the next level, the FLYRS RAD Team offers a dedicated pathway for advanced youth racers. Built on the foundation of team camaraderie, focused coaching, and a passion for riding, RAD provides an affordable and accessible outlet for young athletes aiming to excel in competitive mountain biking. Funded through grants, donations, and sponsorships, the program reduces financial barriers, making high-level racing more attainable for committed riders.

RAD (Race and Development Team) - Starts January - May
The FLYRS RAD team was an idea years in the making. The FLYRS and local high school club teams are developing a lot of riders each year (1,000+ participants in FLYRS in 2024) resulting in many athletes who want to pursue competitive mountain biking. Most national competitive youth development teams are only a team in concept but not in actual practice, cost thousands of dollars, and have an extremely high burnout rate. Like all FLYRS programs, we wanted to create a much-needed space that didn’t currently exist in our community.
The RAD Team takes the FLYRS concept of creating team comradery, having fun on bikes, progressive/focused coaching, and developing fast riders into an outlet for competitive riders to excel in the future.
FLYRS invests in Flagstaff’s driven youth mountain bikers through the RAD team to help them pursue their goals. The RAD team is financially supported by FLYRS to keep the cost to participants a small fraction of the actual program costs through grants, donations, and sponsorships. This fulfills our goal of eliminating barriers and creating more access into the upper levels of the sport of mountain biking where competitive pursuits become financially challenging and inaccessible.
