The Virtual Greg Nelson Challenge Presented by FLYRS
This is an all inclusive challenge in the spirit of The Greg Nelson Challenge which was created in 2011.
The Greg Nelson Challenge was created as a way to honor Greg and his love of mountain biking after his multiyear battle with brain cancer. The idea is to challenge yourself in whatever way that resonates with you individually. From kiddos to adults, physical efforts to mental or technical efforts, the challenge is yours!
The rules are simple:
Determine a challenge for yourself, individually, that would be a big accomplishment for you on a bike. It could be anything from learning how to ride a bike, going on your longest ride, climbing your most vertical, and/or completing a technical trail.
Then register for the challenge in October when it opens, tag the FLYRS on Instagram and/or Facebook when you have completed your challenge, and include a picture if possible.
All registrations matched with a tag are entered into a drawing to win prizes.
Registration is free but donations are highly encouraged. All donations are tax deductible and will go towards funding the Puente de Hózhó Trail Park.

History of the Challenge:
The Greg Nelson Challenge was founded in 2011 by his children in honor of the World's Greatest Dad. Greg was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (stage 4 brain cancer) at the young age of 57. An avid cyclist, his overriding goal during radiation, chemo, and multiple complications was always to "get back on the bike." This proved to be the toughest challenge when the cancer left him semi-paralyzed. Through endless hours of physical therapy, Greg enjoyed the small steps of progress: being able to grip a handlebar, stepping onto a pedal, riding a recumbent, getting on a spin bike, and eventually making it back onto his own mountain bike.
Why the obsession with the bike? As a man of the outdoors, Greg rarely went a day without cycling. It was his exercise, his stress reliever, his communing with nature, his challenge, and his passion. At age 40, Greg entered the Widow Maker Mountain Bike Hill Climb for the first time to test his vitality and prove he was still young. This sufferfest became a yearly test for Greg and motivation to continue healthy living.
When Greg passed away in 2010 after his fierce three and a half-year battle, his children vowed to continue his tradition and enter the race in his honor. They raced the Widowmaker every year until it was discontinued in 2019, and the Virtual Challenge was created in 2020.
